Course Description

The class will study the urban environment through the digital mediums utilized in the design profession to analyze the dynamic design, ecology, environmental systems of cities.

For Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design professionals, GIS and open source geodata contain diverse opportunities for spatial analysis. But in the process of spatial analytical conversions and formal operations, geodata are not adequately transferred. The objective of this platform is to investigate and build upon the diverse digital methodologies that utilize geodata for the analysis and design of urban environments and ecological systems. We hope to create a platform to investigate the active relationship of urban form and organizations with natural and artificial environments.

The course is divided into four parts.

Part 1 will cover basic 2D drawing and 3D modeling using Rhino, Grasshopper as well as open source topographic, building height data transfer procedures using ArcGIS, Google Earth, SketchUp and Rhino.

Part 2 will focus on the environmental simulation and analysis plug-in program Ladybug, wind analysis program ACAD Flow Design and pedestrian network analysis plug-in Urban Network Analysis as well as additional GH definitions for surface drainage and slope analysis.

Part 3 will utilize a specific site to propose massing by analyzing the zoning and environmental properties such as solar, wind, radiance, vegetation and hydrology for design application.

Part 4 will focus on the visualization and representation of the analysis and massing for the site to be produced into a book, animation/slideshow and a 3D printed site model.

Please note that the objective of this course is to explore different approaches to urban environment analysis utilizing diverse digital mediums and is not a comprehensive software learning course. Students do not need prior knowledge of programs used in class but basic ACAD and 3D modeling knowledge will be preferred.
